 NEGC-2016 : Connecting young talents of North East 

The 3rd North East Graduate Congress, an ERDF initiative and the only graduate congress in the country was participated by more than six thousand five hundred students from more than two hundred colleges of the North Eastern region besides three thousand five hundred students of University of Science and Technology-Meghalaya (USTM) & Regional Institute of Science & Technology (RIST) from 26th to 28th February, 2016. Organised by USTM in association with RIST, these three days programme was aimed to enhance all-round development and bring out capabilities of the future graduates through various life skill processes to bring out their inherent capabilities and expose them to various opportunities.

The Congress was inaugurated with a colourful cultural procession by all the participating colleges which was flagged off by Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Cotton College State University Dr. Dhrubajyoti Saikia, Former Pro Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury and Chancellor of USTM Shri M. Hoque. Former Governor of Meghalaya Shri RS Mooshahary was the chief guest of the inaugural session. All these dignitaries had appreciated this initiative of USTM to connect the young budding talents of the North Eastern region in one common platform. On the same occasion, Ms. Rajashree Saikia, a student of USTM who has qualified NET was felicitated and her entire course fee was reimbursed to her parents as per the policy of USTM.

The highlight of first day’s programme was “Milan Khetra”-a platform for introduction of participants from different colleges and motivational speech by Honourable Vice-Chancellor of National Law University & Judiciary Academy Prof Vijendra Kumar and Mr. Aseem Kazi, AIR followed by different cultural competitions. The Day 2 had sessions on “Competitive Examinations” by expert Mr. Sailen Baishya; “Personality Development & Soft Skill, Making Yourself Employable” by renowned motivational speaker Ajay Mishra and Professor of Gauhati University Dr. Gayatree Goswamee; “Challenges to Youth in Modern World Perspectives” by expert Mr. Thomas John Rose; Panel discussion on “Youth Entrepreneurship & Nation Building” by MP Mr. Gaurav Gogoi, Adviser to EDI, India Mr. K.Ahmed, Social Actvist Mr. Ranjan Barua & Educationist & Social Activist Mr. Mazim Mukhtar. Former Chief Minister of Delhi Smt. Sheila Dikshit, had also graced the Congress & addressed the gathering on the topic “Women & Politics”.

The Graduate Congress was marked by various competitions of Debate, Photography, Write up, Quiz and Best Graduate for which attractive prizes of Laptop, iPad, Mobile Phones and cash were given. The results of different competitions are - best participating college-Rangia College, best disciplined college-Barama College, Best Graduate (Male)-Kuldeep Soren from B. Barooah College, Best Graduate (Female)-Jessica Mellicent from St. Anthony’s College, Best Debator-Tahina Rahman from Gauhati University. During the Congress, a Science Marathon was also organized where more than fifty Science Models were displayed for competition by various engineering colleges.

In the cultural evening of the second day, the Indian Idol Jr Runners up Nahid Afrin was warmly felicitated for bringing laurels to the region. She had mesmerised the audience with her melodious voice.

On the valedictory session of the congress, all the participant students had expressed that they had an unique experience during the three days stay and thanked the authorities for the hospitality.
