ERDF Confers Award of Excellence to Padmashree Dr. Mehmoodur Rehman, Former VC, AMU


February 28, 2015 : In a glittering function in presence of the faculty and higher officials of its flagship institutions University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) and Regional Institute of Science & Technology (RIST), ERD Foundation, Guwahati conferred the Award of Excellence to Padmashree Dr. Mehmoodur Rehman (IAS) Former Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University for his outstanding contribution in the field of Administrative services and also in social upliftment especially of the Minority Community on February 28th , 2014 in Techno City, 9th Mile, Meghalaya.

In the same occasion Dr. Rehman delivered a talk on the topic: “Role of Faculty in Institution Building”. In his talk he stressed on achieving excellence in whatever one practices. He said that the role of faculty is stupendous in helping students to Yoga (Achieve Skillfulness/ Excellence). To build a strong nation a strong foundation is needed. Elaborating on this Dr. Rehman quoted noted historian Arnold Tyonbee who had said, “Whichever civilization has built monuments without a strong foundation that civilization has faced decadence”. He further went on to state that Universities were created for community learning and in the past India was the centre for community learning and that we should strive to bring back the past days of glory. He also said that to nurture an environment for community learning “stereotype” lectures have to be done away with as they hold no meaning in such a set up.

During his talk he went on to say that the Chancellor, USTM Shri. Mahbubul Hoque resembles Sir Syed both in appearance and his work. He also praised USTM as a place of supreme beauty.

In the same function “Mechazine” the annual magazine brought out by the students of Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, RIST was released by Dr. Rehman, who is a revered name in Jammu and Kashmir.

It was because of his yeoman’s service in J&K he was awarded the Padmashree in 1991. He had also established the Agriculture University of J&K and the Horticulture Processing and Marketing Corporation during his tenure as Commissioner and Secretary, Agriculture of J&K. His contribution for the rehabilitation of Tibetan refugees in Ladakh is tremendous. He was also the Chief Negotiator of the Govt. of J&K in the peaceful resolution of the Hazratbal Crisis in Kashmir in Nov., 1993. Presently he is the Chairman of the Bombay Mercantile Bank.
