16 Vice Chancellors from North East India joining International Convention of Vice Chancellors at Sylhet, Bangladesh

 

GUWAHATI/9th Mile, Ri Bhoi, 29 March 2019: In a unique step towards enhancing higher educational ties between India and Bangladesh, 16 Vice Chancellors from Central, State, private universities as well as Directors of NITs from the North East are going to Sylhet on 5th of April to participate in the ‘International Convention of Vice Chancellors- 2019’ to be held on 6th April. The main purpose of the Convention is to share the scope of collaboration in teaching, research and innovation between the two countries. It is organised by Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh under the patronage of University Grant Commission, Bangladesh in association with University of Science & Technology Meghalaya. Convention will be attended by 400 vice chancellors, directors, top researcher’s from both countries and will be graced by Dr Dipu Moni, Education Minister, Peoples republic of Bangladesh and Prof A Mannan, UGC Chairman of Bangladesh along with other ministers.

The Convention is the outcome of a Panel Discussion on ‘Bilateral Collaboration Opportunities in the Field of Higher Education between Bangladesh and North East India’ organized by USTM in association with High Commission Bangladesh at Guwahati in October last year which was participated by Shri Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Education Minister, Assam, Prof Abdul Mannan, UGC Chairman, Bangladesh and Vice Chancellors of universities from the North East. On that occasion, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM proposed to Prof Mannan to host a Vice Chancellors’ convention at Sylhet, which was appreciated by all the panelists.

“We see that while trade and commerce, surface and air connectivity between India and Bangladesh are being emphasized, the area concerning education has remained unexplored. I believe that this initiative will strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries through development and expansion of education. This positive note has been showed through the enthusiastic participation of the Vice Chancellors of universities of North East India, apart from those participating from Bangladesh side”, stated Mahbubul Hoque, International coordinator of the convention and Chancellor, USTM . The Government of India’s Act East Policy recognizes this geographical proximity and wants to open up this region to strengthen bilateral relationships. “To my understanding, stakeholders of universities of both the regions must come together and work for mutual benefit. ICVC 2019 is a timely action in this direction. I am confident that this convention would open doors for further networking in the field of education among the ASEAN countries including Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and India’s North East in near future”, Mr. Hoque added in another statement .

Those VCs and Directors who have confirmed from the North East India includes Dr Mridul Hazarika, VC, Gauhati University, Prof Vinod Kumar Jain, VC, Tezpur University; Prof. Saket Kushwaha, VC, Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh; Prof. M. Premjit Singh, VC, Central Agricultural University, Manipur, Prof. G. Singaiah, Pro VC, North East Hill University, Meghalaya; Prof. K.R.S. Sambasiva Rao, VC, Mizoram University; Prof. Bhabesh Ch. Goswami, VC, Cotton University; Dr. Dhiraj Bora, VC, Assam Science and Technology University, Assam; Prof. (Dr.) J. S. Patil, VC, National Law University, Assam; Prof (Dr) PK Goswami, VC, University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya; Prof. K.K. Deka, VC, Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva Viswavidyalaya, Assam; Prof Vincent T. Darlong, VC, Martin Luthar Christian University, Meghalaya; Prof. (Dr.) Goutam Sutradhar, Director NIT Manipur; Prof (Dr) Alaka Sarma, Director, International Centre for Gandhian Studies, Meghalaya; Prof. Rajat Gupta, Director, NIT, Mizoram; Prof N C Talukdar, Director, IASST, Assam. Registrars, Deans, Directors and OSDs of few universities are also accompanying their Vice Chancellors.

All participants agreed to say that this kind of convention of top academicians are happening first time in the history of Bangladesh and India which will create a new route for establishing people to people contact though educational avenues and will facilitate peace and progress among the people of both countries.
