National
Youth Day Celebrated at USTM

Youth must contribute for the
development of the nation – Swami Atmasuddhananda
January 12th Jan, 2018, USTM, Ri Bhoi : “Choose the
highest ideal and live your life upto that. Look at the
“ocean” and not at the wave”. – Swami Vivekananda.
When the entire country is observing 33rd National Youth
Day, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya is no
exception to this. Prof. Qumrul Hoque School of Education at
USTM had observed National Youth Day in its own way. The
Indian government had declared back in 1984 that Swamiji’s
birthday would be celebrated as the National Youth Day and
it was implemented in the year 1985. The main aim behind
this is to make sure that the students across the country
can be encouraged to learn about the life, the ideals and
philosophy of Swami Vivekananda and apply them in their
lives.
Swami Atmasuddhananda, secretary, Ramakrishna Mission,
Guwahati was the chief guest of the occasion who delivered a
talk on ‘Swami Vivekananda and Youth Power’. While welcoming
the chief guest, Dr. R K Sharma, Pro VC, USTM said “
Vivekananda was not just India’s greatest religious leader,
rather ever inspiring and oft quoted spiritual power and his
spiritual thoughts were all deeply rooted in Indian culture
and tradition, herein lies his relevance till today”.
Swami Atmasuddhananda in his talk on ‘Swami Vivekananda and
Youth Power’ narrated how Vivekananda alias Narendranath had
overcome all obstacles in his life to become India’s great
spiritual leader of all time. Quoting a shloka from
Upanishad which says sarvé bhavantu sukhinaḥ / sarvé santu
nirāmayāḥ/ sarvé bhadrāṇi pashyantu / mā kashchid
duḥkha-bhāg-bhav (All should/must be happy, be healthy, see
good / may no one have a share in sorrow), Swami
Atmasuddhananda urged all students to contribute in a
slightest possible way for the growth and prosperity of the
nation. He reminded all that science and technology can
bring about development but that development would be
incomplete if there is no religion, ie, realization in the
words of Vivekananda. Vivekananda never intended to mean
religion in the sense of worshipping gods or goddesses, for
him “religion always implies realization or
self-realization’. He also added “all advancement in science
and technology must be rooted in Indian tradition or our
rich cultural heritage”. Swami ji also emphasized the fact
that Vivekananda was the first spiritual leader in those
days who brought spirituality close to reality, day-to-day
life, all spirituality must solve the real life or practical
problems faced by the common man, if it fails to connect
common people, religion is no longer religion at all,
clearly stated in Vivekannda’s writings.
The program ended with a video presentation on Vivakananda’s
thoughts and Preaching by Dr. Saru Joshi
