Workshop on
Microbiology & Immunology began at USTM

January 4th, 2018, USTM, Ri Bhoi : Amidst a paced
audience, 7 days workshop conducted by the School of
Biological Sciences , USTM had opened today. The workshop
had been organized with a view to promote all pervasive
microbial culture, the culture to explore the world of
microbes for the benefit of mankind. As explained by the HoD,
Department of Microbiology “ the purpose is to address and
cover the knowledge -gaps regarding basic and molecular
techniques in Microbiology and Immunology for students,
research scholars, industry and laboratory personnel’. The
workshop got kickstarted with the welcome address by Dr. R K
Sharma, Pro-VC, USTM followed by Dr. Suresh Ch Das, Dean,
School of Biological Sciences, USTM, Dr. Ranjan Dutta Kalita,
HoD, Dept. of Biotechnology. All three, while narrating how
microbes play an important role both in the physical world
as well as body-system, emphasized the need to upgrade
policies by the Government for conducting extensive research
on newer techniques of exploring the diversity of microbic
world. Dr. Kalita specifically informed that the School of
Biological Sciences, USTM is providing support to the
surrounding colleges in Guwahati for conducting workshops on
Microbiology & Immunology as very less colleges have the
resource and infrastructural facilities to generate
knowledge on advanced techniques.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the workshop, Dr.
Dhruba K Jha, HoD, Department of Botany, GU, the chief guest
and key note speaker of the workshop, had extended
congratulation to USTM and the Department for taking this
initiative. He then went on explaining how microbes can be
used for sustainable development of the society and urged
that the Central Government and the State Government must
take cognizance of the fact that the research on basic
science to promote proper utilization of microbial resources
is of utmost importance: “ microbes present everywhere, from
living organisms on planets to human body to environment and
hence if their activity can be properly explored and
utilized for developmental purpose starting from agriculture
to industrial products, medicine to food technology,
recycling of organic waste products etc. many problems can
be sorted out”. Prof. Jha added.
A total number of hundred students from various universities
across North Eastern states and outside NE Region including
Amity Noida, Chatinath Deemed University, Chennai, Cotton
State University had participated in the workshop. The
inaugural session, followed by an interactive session with
the students, ended with a firm resolve by all the
dignitaries and scholars, students present that science
would be taken from laboratory to the real ground so that
all genuine problems concerning all hazards can be minimized
and used for the social and economic growth of the country.
The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Deboja Sarma, Asst.
Prof, Dept of Applied Biology. Worthwhile to mention,
University of Science and Technology Meghalaya has left no
stone unturned to promote the culture of research and
innovation not just within the students’ community, rather
its faculties and other administrative staff. |
