Day observed at USTM
Ri Bhoi, USTM, 22 December 2017: To celebrate the
130th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the
Department of Mathematics, University of Science and
Technology Meghalaya organized National Mathematics Day
today at the University conference hall. A seminar
presentation and competitions were organized among the
students of Mathematics on topics related to Mathematics
used in practical life.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest of the programme
Dr Rupam Barman, Associate Professor, IIT Guwahati said that
certain qualities that are nurtured by mathematics are power
of reasoning, creativity, abstract or spatial thinking,
critical thinking, problem-solving ability and even
effective communication skills. Even insects use mathematics
in their everyday life for existence. USTM Chancellor
Mahbubul Hoque also addressed the participants and said that
one cannot lead life without application of mathematics in
day to day matters. Others who addressed the students and
teachers include, Prof RK Sharma, Pro VC, USTM, Prof Alaka
Sarma, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof
Enamul Karim, Dean of Applied Science and Ajmal Barbhuiya,
Academic Registrar, USTM.
Three power point presentations were made by three groups of
students of the Mathematics department, titled ‘Application
of congruent number in practical life’, ‘Mathematics in
Nature’ and ‘Application of Criptography in real life’.
Interesting mathematical discussions such as application of
congruence in ISBN number and ATM card number caught
interest of the audience.
