Events and Activities, Year 2015



• Janakristi Samaroh organized at CPS-Badarpur : To promote and give exposure to the rich folk art forms of the various tribes and regional art forms of greater Barak Valley, ERD Foundation in association with Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati organized “Janakristi Samaroh” on 14th February, 2015 at Central Public School, Badarpur. Various groups from different tribes and communities performed their art forms coming from all corners of the valley. This was the first of its kind where these types of performances were done in one platform. The whole initiative of the programme was taken by ERD Foundation which was unique in the history of Barak Valley. The programme was telecast live by Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati from 3 pm onwards which was attended by Shri D. N. Basumatari, Deputy Director General (P) of Doordarshan Kendra, Shri M. Hoque, Chairman of ERD Foundation, dignitaries and a large number of audiences of all age groups from across the region.

• ERDF felicitated eminent personalities of Barak Valley : In a colourful function named as “Arunabh Prabeen” held on 14th February, 2015 at Central Public School, Badarpur, ERD Foundation in association with Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati warmly felicitated 22 eminent senior personalities from different walks of life of greater Barak Valley. They were –Allama Tayeebur Rahman Barbhuiya, Ameere Shariat, NE Region; Dr. Tapash Shankar Dutta, Ex Principal G C College, Silchar; Shafique Uddin Ahmed, Educationist & Social Worker; Sri Bidhan Chanda Choudhury, Dramatist; Dr. Swapan Kr. Das, Senior Physician, Badarpur; Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Ex-Principal, Karimganj College; Shri Bijoy Krishna Nath, Founder, Dainik Jugashanka; Sri Irabat Singha, Social Worker & Human Rights Activist; Shri Shanath Koiri, Editor, Silchar Times; Dr. Burhan Uddin A. Barbhuiya, Ex Prof. NIT,Silchar; Taimur Reza Chaudhury, Founder, Samayik Prasanga; Shri Uttam Chand Burman; Shri Anandamayi Bhattacharya; Shri Badrujjamen Choudhury; Haji Abdul Latif, Founder Principal, Nilambazar College; Dr. Shib Tapan Basu, Ex-Principal, NC College, Badarpur; Anup Chand Daftary, Social Activist; Jogendra Kumar Sinha, President, Nikhil Bishnupriya Sanskriti Parishad; Imad Uddin Bulbul, Writer & Social Activist; Abid Raja Mazumder, Ex Principal Nehru College; Bishwanath Barua, Retired Teacher; Maulana Usuf Ali Sahab, Ex-Principal Deorail Title Madrassa. All these legendary people of the valley were given such honour for their outstanding contribution to the society throughout their life and also to wish them good health to continue their good work.

• Workshop on CISCO Networking : A two days workshop on “Cisco Networking” was organised by IBNC on 13th and 14th February, 2015 in association with IIT Delhi in the department of Computer Science and Electronics of USTM. The workshop was innaugurated by hon’bl e Vice Chancellor Dr. P.G. Rao by lightening the lamp. Mr. Niraj Kumar, resource person from IBNC trained the participants theoretically and practically on configuration on Cisco Routers & Switches, Routing and switching protocol concepts with implementation, Ipv4 and Ipv6 addressing, Sub netting, creating live network on Cisco Routers and switches. At the end of the 2nd day of the workshop a competition was conducted among the participants. Two students from BCA were selected as winners. Winners will get direct entry to the IBNC grand finale round at IIT Delhi. The interactive sessions were very fruitful, interesting and inspiring for the participants.

• Workshop on Fuzzy Logic: A one day Workshop on Foundation of Fuzzy Set and Fuzzy Logic was held at RIST on February 7, 2015 in collaboration with NIT Silchar and USTM. The objective of the workshop was to give an idea of real life application and to develop a basic idea of Fuzzy Sets and application of Fuzzy Logic in the computational domain. Dr. Ashok Deshpande, Founding Chair, Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing (BISC) - Special interest Group (SIG) - Environment Management Systems (EMS) was the chief speaker of the workshop. Dr. Deshpande holds a Ph. D. degree in Engineering and Technology and was Deputy Director, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) /CSIR. He is a Visiting Professor in Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and Adjunct Professor in College of Engineering, University of Pune. He has over 4 decades of experience in R&D and has to his credit over 120 publications in Journals of international repute. The workshop was attended by 15 participants from RIST and USTM and 10 from other institutions.

• GATE-2015 : The GATE 2015 examination has been conducted at the campus of RIST on 31st January and 8th February, 2105 in presence of Dr. Sushanta Karmakar, IIT (G), Dr. Tony Jacob, Prof. B. K Patil and others.

• VC, JNU delivered talk at USTM : Honourable Vice Chancelllor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi Prof SK Sopory, who is a renowned Biotechnologist of the country delivered a talk in an interactive session on the topic “Emerging trends & scope of Higher Education and Research in the field of Biological Sciences” on 31st January, 2015. The talk was attended by the faculty members, research scholars and students of USTM as well as Cotton College, Guwahati.

• JNU Vice Chancellor handed over ERDF Excellence Award-2014 to eminent personalities : Professor Sudhir Kumar Sopory, the Honourable Vice Chancelllor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi handed over the “ERDF Excellence Award – 2014” in a colourful function held at University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya on 31st January, 2015. Keeping alive its decade long tradition, this year ERDF Excellence Award was conferred to eminent personalities of the state who have achieved excellence in various fields and contributed immensely to the society. They are - Shri D. N. Bezboruah, noted journalist & former Editor of the Sentinel; Prof Ashok Kumar Goswami, Language expert & Retired Prof. of Sanskrit, GU; Dr. Lakshahira Das, renowned Singer, Lyricist & Writer; Prof M. H. Hazarika, former Head of Genetics & Plant Breeding, Assam Agriculture University; Prof Anil Kumar Goswami, former Principal Cotton College; Dr. Nirupama Mahanta, Social worker; Shri G L Agarwalla, Chairman & MD, G L Publications; Smt. Tayabun Nisha, renowned Sportsperson; Er. Isfaqur Rahman Borborah, Social Worker, Gandhian & former Engineer of OIL; Dr. U. K. Sharma, former Director, NERIST. Shri Radhika Mohan Bhagawati, eminent journalist and Editor of Dainik Asom; Col Monoranjan Goswami, Renowned Columnist; Dr DN Buragohain, Founder Director of IIT, Guwahati & Chancellor of Nagaland University; Dr. Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, Chairperson, Assam Human Rights Commission were also in the list of Awardees but could not attend the function due to ill health and preoccupations. The awards were conferred to the senior citizens as a mark of respect and love from ERDF for their distinguished services to the community and also to wish them good health and long life so that they can continue their service to the society. The meeting was presided over by Shri H. N. Das, Former Chief Secretary, Govt. of Assam. Shri P. J. Barua, Executive Editor of The Assam Tribune also addressed the gathering.

• High Commisioner of Bangladesh to India visited USTM : His Excellency Syed Muazzen Ali, High Commisioner of Bangladesh to India had visited University of Science & Trechnology, Meghalaya campus on 30th January, 2015. He highly appreciated the efforts of USTM in providing quality education to the students North East India.

• Junior College Principals’ Meet (JCPM) – 2015 : The 2nd Junior College Principals’ Meet (JCPM) was successfully organized by Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) in association with University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) on 5th January, 2015. More than one hundred Principals of various Junior Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools from all over North Eastern region have participated in the daylong event. Dr. Kulendu Pathak, Former Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University was the Chief Guest of the event. The Meet was presided over by Dr. P.G. Rao, Honourable Vice Chancellor of USTM. Dr PC Mahanta, Director, RIST, Dr Alaka Desai Sarma, Dean, USTM along with a host of other distinguished and eminent educationist was also present on the occasion. JCPM is an effort of ERD Foundation, Guwahati, to throw light on the various problems and to come up with solutions faced by the Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools. The theme of this year’s Meet was “Infrastructure Development and Image Building of Junior Colleges in the NE Region”. Eminent Educationist, Dr. Gayatri Goswami, Dr. Farhana Perveen, Dr. Dinesh Baishya and few others have offered their valuable suggestions on various burning problems and solutions thereof.

• National Seminar organized during North East Teachers Congress -2014 : A National Seminar on “Changing Scenario in Academic Performance & Audit” was conducted during the second North East Teachers Congress (NETC) organised by University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya in association with Regional Institute of Science and Technology & CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat on 4th January 2015. The seminar was attended by eminent scientists and academicians from North East and national level namely Pro G D Sharma, Honourable Vice Chancelor of Bilaspur University, Prof Bolin Kr Konwar, Honourable Vice Chancelor of Nagaland University, Prof B C Goswami, Director of Academic Staff College, GU, Dr. D. D. Ozha, Senior Scientist, Ground Water Dept from Jodhpur, Dr. R M Pant, Director of NIRD and many other renowned personalities from the academic fraternity of the region. The congress was attended by around five hundred College Teachers from the North Eastern states.

• Research Scholars’ & Guides’ Meet : An interactive meet of research scholars and guides of USTM was organized on 3rd January, 2015 in presence of Dr. D. D. Ojha, Senior Scientist, Ground Water Dept, Rajasthan. The intention behind this meet was to give emphasis on the research and development initiatives of USTM and bring all the research scholars, guides and faculties in the same platform to share each other’s knowledge and to see the progress of the scholars.
