• Visit of NDTV’s Nidhi Kulpati : A very well known face of NDTV India Smt. Nidhi Kulpati, Associate Editor and Anchor was offered the Award of Excellence by USTM on December 19, 2014. An excellent anchor of two current shows of NDTV - Mera Bulletin and India 9 Baje, Smt. Kulpati was warmly felicitated at the campus by high officials of the University. Later she interacted with the students of USTM. The interactive session was very interesting where the students actively participated by raising issues like representation and deprivation of the North East in the national scenario, role of media in eradicating corruption, priority between humanity and duty etc. Smt. Kulpati was overwhelmed by the response of the students and warm hospitality by the management of the University. She expressed her best wishes for the well being of USTM.
• Signing of MoU with Tezpur University : A MoU has been signed between Tezpur University and USTM on December 13, 2014. The MoU was signed by Dr. Amarjyoti Choudhury, Pro Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University and Dr. P. G. Rao, Vice Chancellor of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya in presence of Prof. Mihir Kanti Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University; Mr Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM; Dr. L. Boral, Controller of Examination; Dr. Biren Das, Registrar; Prof. M. Bhuyan; Prof. K. K. Baruah; Prof. C. L. Mahanta, Deans of SoE, SoS and R&D respectively of Tezpur University along with Dr. R. K.Sharma, Pro VC of USTM and other high officials of both USTM and Tezpur University. The MoU has been signed with the mission to create technical and professional manpower and knowledge base in the region conducive for attracting industries from across the country for investment and employment generation so as to stop the exodus of North East students to outside the region for higher education and job opportunities. Both USTM and Tezpur University will exchange research information and experienced researchers between them and will promote research in science and technology. The Institutions will reciprocally facilitate Science based innovation and fact findings resulting into business development activities.

• Together Lunch organized : The entire ERDF family assembled in an “All in One” platform on the sunny noon of December 2, 2014 atop the hilly terrain of Techno City to enjoy a Lunch together on the occasion of session ending and on the eve of Christmas and New Year. The session of 2014 was a hectic one which has been successfully completed. It was only possible due to the excellent team effort of each and every employee of the foundation. For a formal “thanks giving” gesture, the Chairman of the Foundation and Chancellor of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya Mr. Mahbubul Hoque organized the delicious Lunch for all the members of ERDF. In a small ceremony before the lunch, five senior faculty members from its group of institutions were felicitated with an attractive gift for their dedicated service and excellent performance. They were Dr. Gautam Sharma, Mr. Probin Phanjom, Ms. Sony Kumari, Ms. Daisy Kalita and Mr. Joynul Abedin. The higher officials of ERDF, adminstrative staff, almost 300 faculty members, 150 support staff along with 1000 students enjoyed the lunch at the same time which had not happened in the history of ERDF till date. Shri Hoque announced that it will be an annual event and from next year on it will be organized with more vigour.

• World AIDS Day : The Dept of Social Work, USTM has organized an Awareness rally from on the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2014. A street play to create awareness about AIDS and HIV was also showcased on the occasion.

• Signing of MoU with NIT, Silchar : A MOU was signed between National Institute of Technology, Silchar (NITS) and the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), on November 29, 2014. The MOU was signed by Prof. N. V. Deshpande, Director for NIT Silchar and Shri. Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya in the presence of Directors and representatives of various NITs of the North Eastern region and high officials of CSIR and USTM. The collaboration provides that NITS will guide USTM in academic promotion, research, infrastructure and placement and higher education to stop the exodus of North East students outside the region for higher education and job opportunities. NIT Silchar will also guide USTM and RIST in administration and quality faculty recruitment. Prof. Deshpande who had recently visited the Schools, Institutes and the University established by M. Hoque under the aegis of ERD Foundation, had appreciated the efforts of this young man specially for the education of underprivileged rural students. He further assured all kinds of support from NIT Silchar to the institutes under the foundation.

• Talent Fest – 2014 organized at Central Public School-Patharkandi: An unique four days extravaganza “Talent Fest-2014” was organized by ERD Foundation at Central Public School (CPS), Patharkandi in the Karimganj district to give the much needed exposure for the school students of greater Barak Valley. The event was organized from 11th to 14th November, 2014 on the occasion of National Education Day which was commemorated to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister of India. The event concluded with the celebration of Childrens’ Day. More than ten thousand students joined the Fest from nearby one hundred schools of the valley.

The inaugural session was graced by Dr. N. V. Deshpande, Director of NIT, Silchar; Dr. P.G. Rao, VC of USTM; Principals of all Colleges and Schools of Barak Valley and other eminent academicians of the region. During the inauguration ceremony, the first ever “ERDF Rocket Shuttle” promoted by CPS students with the help of Academy of Aero Modelling & Robotics was also launched.

The main attraction of the Fest was the Science Model Exhibition where around one hundred twenty numbers of models on different interesting topics of Science were demonstrated by the students of Central Public School. The best model adjudged was “Conversion of CO2 to O2” demonstrated by the students of Central Public School, Badarpur. Other competitions like Quiz, Debate, Extempore Speech, Painting, Wall Paper presentation and Recitation were participated by the students of all the Schools of Barak Valley. The topic of the debate was “Use of Internet, Mobile and other electronic equipments, is a threat to the School Students”. The best debator award was begged by Pratik Shikhawat of Central Public School, Patharkandi speaking for the motion of the topic. Attractive prizes of Laptop, ipad and cash awards were distributed to the winners.
• National Education Day & Science Day observed : To commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the Prof. Quomrul Hoque School of Education, USTM celebrated National Education Day with a day long programme including a seminar entitled “Modern Innovations in Education” on November 11, 2014 at the University premises. Dr Gayatree Goswami and Dr Dulumoni Goswami, Associate Professors, Deptt. of Education, Guahati University graced the occasion as Guests of Honour. In her address Dr. Gayatree Goswami stressed on strengthening the quality of education in India as education is a critical pillar of human development. She spoke on the instrumental role that teachers can play by imbibing the right knowledge, values and skills necessary for the students to cope with the world of tomorrow and by utilizing education as the ethical filter of the society. Dr. Goswami stated that USTM can play the role of a model University by helping to eradicate the evils such as child labour and minimal access to education by providing scholarships to poor students. She further stressed on the need to restructure the academic syllabi and curriculum of the institutions providing the degree of education to suffice the needs of the present society. Dr. Dulumoni Goswami delivered the keynote address during the seminar and said that education is the engine of growth for the nation in the path of attaining self sufficiency. She said that the present age can be tagged as the age of explosion of knowledge, information and expectations because of which there is a global change in the scenario of education.

• World Science Week for Peace and Development : A day long program was organized by the NSS Cell in association with School of Biological Sciences in the University premises on November 11, 2014. Around eleven Schools of Assam and Meghalaya participated in Inter-School Extempore Speech and Quiz Competitions organized on the occasion.

• Official Launch of “Social Cultural and Economic Rights of Assam in North East Indian States” : Assam Youth for Change in association with USTM launched the Women’s Campaign in relation to Social Cultural and Economic Rights of Assam in North East Indian States on November 09, 2014. The Program was inaugurated by Ms. Deborah C. Marak, Honourable Minister, Social Welfare, Govt. of Meghalaya. A Panel Discussion on the topic was also organized which was attended by Ms. Rumi Nath, MLA, Assam; Ms. Meera Borthakur, Political Activist; Ms. Geetanjali Bhattacharjee, Rights Activist; Ms. Shreemoyee Raina Sharma, Child Life Specialist and a host of other dignitaries. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Alaka Sarma Dean, Students’ Welfare, USTM. A Case Study on “The Actual Facts of Women Discrimination- Poverty, Education, Health & Empowerment” was presented on the occasion by Dr. Parbin Sultana, Faculty, USTM.

• Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup addressed the newcomers at USTM : “With proper Attitude, Approach and little Aptitude any one can do miracles in life and achieve great success in their career”, this was stated by Dr J Balaji, the District Commissioner of Kamrup and the CEO of Biotech Park, while addressing at the Freshman Social of USTM on November 3, 2014. Dr Balaji encouraged the students to be visionary, responsible towards themselves, society, state and the country. He further said that Northeast is not lacking in talents, with proper guidance and hard work the youth of this region can bring all round development to their respective states. He expressed his delight seeing the students of all over northeast gathered at USTM.

The Vice Chancellor Dr PG Rao, Dean of various schools, faculties, along with the students and administrative officials of USTM were present on the occasion. Dr Balaji distributed the prize among the winners of various competitions, like Mr and Miss USTM, ethnic Fashion show etc.

• USTM offered Award of Excellence to Dr. Saif Sheikh :
Director of Neo Pharm Inc. and Vice President of Jina Pharmaceuticals Inc.; Dr. Saif Sheikh of United States of America was offered Award of Excellence by University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya. A Post Doctorate Scientist from Purdue University, Johns Hopkins University and Pittsburg Medical Center, Dr. Sheikh had visited the University campus on November 3, 2014. In order to appreciate his outstanding and visionary contribution towards upliftment of education by way of counseling and financial assistance to the underprivileged students of India, USTM had presented this Award of Excellence to Dr. Sheikh. A Masters in Biochemistry from Aligarh Muslim University, Doctorate from IIT, Kanpur and MBA from University of Pittsburg, USA, Dr. Saif Sheikh is the present President of Federation of Aligarh Alumni Associations (FAAA) of USA. He has also dynamic contribution towards coordination among the AMU Fraternity based in America and other parts of the world.

During the visit, Dr. Sheikh had delivered a talk on “Opportunities of Higher Education in USA” and interacted with the students of USTM & RIST. He had encouraged the students to prepare for examinations like GRE, TOEFL etc. to qualify themselves to go to USA. He had assured all kinds of necessary support to the students.

• National Unity Day – 2014 celebrated : USTM celebrated National Unity Day for the very first time to commemorate the 139th birth anniversary of Late Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on November 1, 2014. On the occasion a pledge taking ceremony was organized in the earlier half of the day. In the second half Sardar Patel’s life and his contributions for the country were broadcast on Campus News and a Unity Run was organized where students and faculty members participated led by the Vice Chancellor, USTM Dr. P. G. Rao. The run was flagged off by Pro. VC, USTM Dr. R. K. Sharma from Annexure 1. The programme ended at Gyan Circle with the National anthem.

• National Rededication Day observed : On the occasion of 30th death anniversary of India’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 2014, USTM observed “National Rededication Day” in Techno City to pay homage to the great lady who had worked dedicatedly to safeguard the national integration of the country.

• Visit to flood affected people of Boko : A group of Students from the School of Business Sciences, USTM guided by Dr. Alaka Sarma, Dean, Students’ Welfare and Mr. Angsuman Dutta, Astt. Prof, Dept. of Business Administration visited three flood affected villages namely Katkhaty, Dakhilipara and Dirima on October 22, 2014. Apart from distributing the relief material, to the flood affected people of the villages, the students also undertook a Survey on the “Socio-Economic Status and Economic Impact of Flood on the Lives of the People”. This report was compiled and submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup. Study material was especially distributed among the students of the above named flood affected villages.

• Students’ Forum formed : The full fledged USTM Students’ Forum was formed on October 21, 2014 with due process of selection. Mr. Aditya Das, 3rd Semester, M.Sc. Zoology was selected as the Coordinator and Ms. Rajashri Saikia, 3rd Semester, M. Com as the Joint Coordinator. The first meeting of the newly constituted Students’ Forum was organized on October 27, 2014. Dr. P. G. Rao, Honourable Vice-Chancellor, USTM; Dr. Alaka Sarma, Dean, Students’ Welfare, USTM; Ms. Mehjabeen Rahman, Nodal Officer, Students’ Forum, USTM; the Faculty Coordinators, the Office Bearers of the Students’ Forum , Class Representatives and Joint Class Representatives of all the semesters from all the departments of all the schools were present in this meeting. In the meeting, Honourable VC congratulated all the members of the newly constituted Students’ Forum and highlighted the roles and functions of the Students’ Forum. The Oath of Office to all the Office Bearers was administrated by Dr. Alaka Sarma. Under the Students’ Forum a Students Grievance Cell is also actively functioning. Apart from solving miscellaneous complains from students counseling is provided to the needy student under this cell. Student members of this forum have been identified based on their academic performance as well extracurricular activities.
• Swach Bharat Mission: The NSS Cell along with the Department of Sociology and the Department of Social Work organized a program on the theme Swach Bharat Mission on October 18, 2014 in 9th Mile, Baridua, an adopted village of NSS Cell, USTM. A Street Play to create awareness regarding Hygiene and Cleanliness was also performed on the occasion.
• VC of MJP Rohilkhand University visited USTM :
Eminent Nano Technologist and Honourable Vice Chancellor of MJP Rohilkhand University Prof Mushahid Husain visited the campus of USTM on 24th September, 2014. During this visit, he went to each and every department of the University and thrilled to see the rapid infrastructural growth of this infant University. He had lauded the entrepreneurial efforts of the Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque for making quality education accessible to the students of the region. Prof Husain quoted him as a true visionary.
He further assured that Rohilkhand University will extend all kinds of collaborative help to USTM specifically in the field of Nano Science & Technology. He had a discussion with the authorities of USTM for signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Universities. Earlier Prof Husain was warmly welcomed and felicitated by Dr. P.G. Rao, VC of UTM in presence of the Chancellor and other high officials of the University. Prof. Husain wished for a bright future of USTM.

• VC, Jamia Millia Islamia inaugurated ‘PQH School of Education” :
Prof Talat Ahmad, Honourable Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia inaugurated Prof. Qoumrul Hoque School of Education, a constituent college of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) on 20th September, 2014. This school of education will be catalyst in producing quality trained teachers in the region. Prof Ahmad said that he has been visiting North East for quite sometime for his Research work and projects and was delighted to see the efforts of a single person, Mr. Mahbubul Hoque the Chancellor of USTM to make such a huge contribution in the field of Education. He also assured that Jamia Millia Islamia will be in full collaboration and association with USTM in terms of manpower and other Academic and Research related activities. He wished for its bright future.
On the same occasion, the ‘Centre for Innovation and Rural Development' of USTM was also inaugurated by Prof Ahmad.

• Chancellor, USTM received EduClusion Award at Singapore :
Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya and Chairman of ERD Foundation had received the EDUCLUSION Award bestowed by Engineering Watch, India’s most prestigious community of Engineering Stake holders on 15th September 2014 on the occasion of Engineers Day. The award was conferred in the Reengineering India Summit 2014 held in the Grand Ball Room of Furama City Centre, Singapore. The beautiful citation in a golden frame was handed over to Mr. Hoque by Prof. Thomas L Magnanti, President (Honourable VC) of Singapore University of Technology & Design in presence of Smt. Vijay Thakur Singh, High Commissioner of India to Singapore; Prof. K Lal Kishore, Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and Prof RL Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh Technical University along with other invited dignitaries of both India and Singapore.
During this visit to Singapore, Mr. Hoque had visited the National University of Singapore and interacted with the high officials of the University about the education system of Singapore.

• Vice Chancellor of USTM Honoured : Dr Paruchuri Gangadhar Rao, Vice Chancellor of University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) was honored with the Eminent Engineer Award by The Institution of Engineers (India) on 5th September 2014 at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala. The IEI conducts annual convention and national seminar every year in different disciplines and in different places. This year the 30th Annual Convention of Chemical Engineers and National Seminar on “Recent Trends on Research, Development and Innovations in Chemical Industries” were held at NIT, Agartala from 5th to 7th Sep. 2014. During the Inaugural Function of the convention, Dr Rao was honored with a Plaque and a Citation as Eminent Engineering Professional for his outstanding contribution to the profession of Chemical Engineering. Dr Rao received the award from the hands of the Honorable Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and Chairman, Tripura Industrial Development Corporation Ltd., Sri Jitendra Chaudhury, who was the chief guest of the Inaugural function. The award was presented in the presence of Sri M Nagaraju, Secretary, Industry & Commerce Department, Govt. of Tripura, Dr LV Muralikrishna Reddy, Vice President, IEI, Mr NB Vasoya, Chairman, Chemical Engineering Division Board, IEI, Dr PN Singh, Former Chairman, Board of Governors, NIT Agartala, Dr Gopal Mugareya, Director, NIT, Agartala, Dr Swapan Bhaumik, Chairman, IEI, Tripura State Center, Delegates of the seminar, Faculty, staff and students of NIT, Agartala.

• Orientation of USTM : The orientation programme of more than one thousand students of the new batch of USTM was held on 23rd August, 2014 which was graced by Dr. K. M. Bujarbarua, Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, Dr. N. V. Deshpande, Director of NIT, Silchar, Dr. S. Sudhakar, Director of North East Space Application Centre, Shillong and Dr. N. K. Chaudhury, Former Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University. While addressing to the new batch of students the chancellor of the University Mr. M. Hoque urged them to be sincere in their studies for which they will be rewarded accordingly. On the occasion, Laptops & ipads were awarded to the students of each department who secured highest percentage of marks in their qualifying examinations. A lucky draw was also organized among all the fresher students and their parents. The student winner Ms. Mina Sharma of department of English received a laptop while the parent winner Mr. Shashi Gogoi received a mixer grinder. These awards were sponsored by those organizations who were the constant service provider in the development process of the University. They were also felicitated with a citation as “Partners in Progress” in the same function.
After the inaugural session parallel sessions for students of various departments were addressed by eminent Professors and Scientists from IIT Guwahati, CSIR-NEIST, Gauhati University, Cotton College, NEHU, Cotton College State University, Aligarh Muslim University, Central Forest Academy, TISS Guwahati, SOS Village, Tezpur University, Jamia Millia Islamia, NIRD and IIM Shillong. Besides orientation for academic courses, the students were counselled for facing competitive examinations for Civil Services and other services by Mr. H.N. Das (IAS) former Chief Secretary, Government of Assam; Prof. Dilip Kr. Barua, Retd. Principal of Cotton College and Mr. Sailen Baishya, Expert in Competitive examinations.

• MPURB Team at USTM: An Inspection team comprising of six members of the Meghalaya Private University Regulatory Board (MPURB) led by Chairman Mr. L. Roy had visited the campus of USTM on 12th August, 2014. The team had physically visited each and every department of the University, academic blocks, Laboratories and the Library. They also interacted with the Faculty members and the students. The team was very happy to see the rapid growth of this infant University. They appraised the state of the art and well equipped laboratories and the well stocked Library. Before leaving the campus, Mr. Roy remarked, “USTM is the No. 1 University of the entire region. It will also emerge as one of the best Universities of the country.” They also expressed that the faculty members are well qualified and the students are satisfied with the facilities provided. The team wished All the Best for the well being of the University.

• Director, IIT Guwahati visited USTM : Prof. (Dr) Gautam Biswas, Director, IIT- Guwahati have visited the University campus on 2nd August, 2014. During an interaction with the students, Prof Biswas said “all over the world higher education is rapidly changing; I want the students to see the societal needs as they will work for the society one day. We today need to brainstorm the strategies of learning of higher education at University level. Humanities and interdisciplinary subjects like biodiversity, zoology, anthropology, pharmacology, unique hydrology etc should be introduced as subjects for societal information in higher education”. Instead of becoming greedy as jobseekers, students must act as an innovator, social scientist and entrepreneur. They must be more focused on innovation and research rather than concentrating on their own career so that they can ultimately contribute for the cause of the nation to make India one of the leading developed countries. He made a presentation titled “Changes in Higher Education: An Introduction of Research to Meet up Societal Need”. After the interaction Prof Biswas visited different departments and academic Blocks of the University and also interacted with the faculty members. He took keen interest in the activities and research initiatives undertaken by the department of Biological Sciences. He was happy to see the Library facilities and other infrastructure that is presently being developed in this nascent University.

• Ms LR Sangma, Chairman, MPSC visited USTM : Ms LR Sangma (IAS), Chairman, Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) and former commissioner of Education department of Govt. of Meghalaya had recently visited the Techno City campus on 2nd August. During her visit she interacted with the students of USTM. Ms Sangma was very much happy to see the rapid growth of the University. While addressing to the students, she said, “I am deeply honoured and privileged to stand here among you all. I shall give you one piece of advice; you have chosen the finest and the best upcoming University well equipped with the best of the infrastructure to mould yourself. This University is a very favorable place to enhance your knowledge. This is the right place to nurture yourself. There will be many opportunities for your success”. Herself an IAS qualified lady, Ms. Sangma also motivated the students to sit for Civil services examination and said that nothing is impossible with hard work, sincerity and devotion. She further said USTM will give the students a better environment of education because of the location. The University is as such, less disturbed as Northeast is gripped with militancy, ethnic conflicts and problems of the various pressure groups, still the students will feel “home away from home”.

• North East College Principals’ Conclave (NCPC)-2014 : This conclave was organized by University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya in association with Assam College Principals’ Council (ACPC) and Regional Institute of Science & Technology, supported by State Bank of India on 23rd July, 2014 with an aim to streamline the education institutions, knowing each other’s potentials & working together to create a healthy and conducive environment for the promotion of educational scenario of the region. The highlight of the conclave was a Seminar on “Higher Education in North East with reference to Rashtriya Uchchatar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA)”. Eminent Scientist and honourable former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had graced the valedictory session of the conclave and addressed the College principals as well as the school students of the vicinity with his valuable words. Dr. Kalam urged the Principals to emphasize on Science & Innovation to be cultured in educational institutions for the greater benefit of the students of the region as well as the country which will be a step towards Technological advancement to make India a developed country. He also mentioned that the North eastern region is full of vibrant potentials and this is the high time to explore them.

The function was also graced by Dr. Mihir Kanti Chaudhury, VC of Tezpur University and Dr. Mridul Hazarika, VC of Gauhati University. Shri R. S. Mooshahary, Former Governor of Meghalaya had inaugurated the conclave.

More than five hundred college principals of all the Degree Colleges of Assam as well as the other NE states, teachers and renowned academicians of the region as well as a large number of students attended the function.

• ERDF Mission Award-2014 : The First ERDF Mission awards were bestowed upon three employees in recognition of their excellent services rendered to ERD Foundation as founder Trustees. The Award consisting of a memento and cash of Rs. 50000 each was given to Balen Haloi, the first office bearer of ERDF, Ms. Anju Hazarika, Director, Welfare of ERDF and Mr. Azmol Hussain Barbhuiya, Registrar of Regional Institute of Science and Technology. The awards were handed over by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, honourable former President of India in the valedictory session of NCPC-2014 on 23rd July, 2014.

• Chancellors visit to USA : Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) had attended the thirteenth annual convention of the Federation of Aligarh Alumni Associations (FAAA) as the distinguished guest held from 20th to 22nd June 2014 in Chicago, USA. He urged upon the Aligarh Alumni living in USA, Canada and other countries of the world to build educational institutions in India and carry forward the Aligarh movement as envisioned by Sir Syed Ahmed and repay their debt to their Alma mater and the country while delivering a talk on the topic “Aligarh Alumni and Institution building”. The Chicago convention gave Mr. Hoque an opportunity to meet Aligarh alumni who have been working as distinguished scientists, professors & heads of department at different USA universities like Michigan State University, Harvard University, University of Houston, North East Ohio Medical University, Georgetown University Medical Centre, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science, Eastern Michigan University. At the Chicago convention Mr. Hoque also met the senior professors of the King Abdul Aziz University, King Fahad Medical Research Center and Umma-Al-Qura University, Makkah from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Besides he met several presidents of companies, CEOs, Scientists working in R & D sectors, working professionals in IT industry, US based Indian Entrepreneurs who also assured for support in possible areas for the growth of USTM. All the members appreciated the effort of Mr. Hoque in building institutions including the university with a humble beginning and warmly felicitated him with a citation.

Junior College Principal’s Meet (JCPM)-2014 : USTM in association with RIST organized an unique meet of Principals of Junior Colleges of North East on May 3, 2014 in the Techno city Campus where almost 60 Principals and senior teachers from various Junior colleges of Assam and Meghalaya participated. The theme of the meet was “Career Counseling and IT Enabled Teaching Learning”. Junior colleges from remote corners of Assam like Tezpur, Kalgachia, Nalbari, Hailakandi, Badarpur, Narayanpur, Barpeta, Bijni, Titabor, Jorhat, Udalguri, Hajo, Kamalpur, Tinsukia and Shillong had participated in this meet. The participants have stated that they have been benefitted by the various Technical sessions and such an initiative will help them guide their students better in a situation where all the importance from government goes to the degree colleges of the locality rather than the junior colleges.

A National Seminar on “Educational status of Minority women in NE India-challenges & future prospects” was organized on 1st March, 2014 supported by Ministry of Minority Affairs, Govt. of India. Total 25 papers on diverse topics were enlisted for presentation in the technical sessions of the seminar entitled “Situational analysis of minorities in NE India – Equity in education, employment and participation” & “Schemes and programmes relating to empowerment of women and role of Govt and non-Govt sectors”.

The North East Graduate Congress-2014 was successfully organized by USTM on 22nd & 23rd February, 2014 sponsored by State Bank of India. More than three thousand students from North Eastern States participated in the two day long programme and took part in various events exchanging views and ideas, mixing with each other, virtually making the Congress a melting pot of all North Eastern States. His Excellency Shri J. B. Patnaik, honourable Governor of Assam inaugurated the event. The event was marked by debates, quiz, extempore speech, write up and model exhibition competitions for which attractive prizes of lap tops, i-Pads and Mobile phones were distributed to the winners. The highlight of the event was a Panel Discussion on “Politics, Corruption and Youth Leadership” attended by many Political leaders and Bureaucrats that evoked huge interest of the participating students.

A National Seminar on the topic “Challenges in Higher Education: A North East Perspective” has been jointly organized by USTM and Madhabdev College, Narayanpur on 29th January, 2014. Seventy research scholars and faculty members from various colleges and Universities of North East have presented research papers in different sessions of the seminar under the sub themes like - Contemporary Trends in Higher Education in India; Status of Higher Education in North East India; Curriculum in perspectives of Social equity; Skill Development and Vocational Education; Globalization of Higher Education: changing scenario in North East India and Governance in Higher Education: Private vs Public.

Awareness Rally on Road Safety : On the occasion of “25th Road Safety Week 2014” on 17th January, 2014, the students of RIST and USTM took out a rally from Jorabat to Byrnihat in association with Meghalaya Police of Ri-bhoi District to spread awareness among public on Road safety as the area is more accident prone. Later in the community hall of Byrnihat, Mr. Souvik Dey, a 4th semester student of Civil Engineering of RIST made a very good presentation on Road Safety Awareness in front of a huge local gathering & high police officials of Byrnihat.

Launch of Techno City Campus News : Shri D. N. Basumatari, Deputy Director General of Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati inaugurated an unique activity developed by the School of Media Sciences of USTM-the Techno City Campus News on 8th January, 2014. This news service is aimed at keeping the students abreast with the latest developments within the campus and outside. It will focus on important news covering examinations, admissions, students life, youth affairs, various notifications & events organized from time to time and all other academic as well as social life in the campus. It will also highlight the career related news like competitive examinations, higher education, job opportunities besides current affairs in national and international arena along with the achievements of students and faculties. The news will be read out every day for ten minutes at lunch break and in order to ensure the news reaches to all parts of the campus, public announcement system has been installed in various locations around the campus.
