Events and Activities, Year 2012

 

  • ERDF in association with University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) honoured the eminent literary personalities of Assam through a colourful felicitation program  to mark the advent of the new year 2012 on 7th January, 2012. The scholars who have made immense contribution to the field of literature namely, Shri  Homen  Borgohain,  Shri  Laksminandan Bora, Shri  Atulananda  Goswami, Dr. Pramod Bhattacharjee , Shri  Arun Sharma, Shri B. S. Narzary and Smt. Eli Ahmed were felicitated on the occasion.
  • A seminar on Human Rights was organized on 12th February, 2012 at RIST where Dr. Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, Chairperson, Assam Human Rights Commission & Former Chief Justice, J & K was the Chief Guest.
  • ERDF signed a MoU with CSIR –North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat on February 24th, 2012. One of the main objectives of the MoU is to motivate the upcoming science students, technocrats, research scholars & faculties to contribute towards research & innovative works for the scientific & technological development.
  • A group of former Vice Chancellors and academic experts from Universities across the country gathered for an Academic Meet organized by the foundation on 10th March, 2012 where they were unanimous in their view that higher education, to be effective and useful, must be need-based and research oriented in addition to being innovative and enlightening.
  • A MoU between CSIR- Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi and the University of Science and Technology-Meghalaya (USTM) an unit of ERD Foundation has been signed on 3rd May, 2012 for promoting research, development and innovation in the region in the areas of roads and bridges, traffic & transportation, ground improvement and geotechnical engineering, rural roads, pavements design, environment and road safety. This memorandum of understanding has been signed with the objective to establish functional coordination between CRRI and ERDF where students of engineering and technology will be immensely benefitted
  • An unique 2 days event named “North East Graduate Congress” was organized by the foundation on 29th & 30th May, 2012 with an aim to enhance all-round development and to bring out capabilities of the future graduates through various life skill sessions which is the first of its kind in the country where senior officials, renowned academicians & stakeholders from industries participated as speakers including the Governor of Assam as the Chief Guest in the valedictory function. Almost 500 students from different colleges of the North Eastern states participated in the event, the foundation arranged their accommodation & fooding for both the days. The concept has been started this year and every year this will be organized by the foundation as a regular event to groom the future generation.
  • ERDF has set up a CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES under the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Science and Technology-Meghalaya on June 13, 2012. The new Centre is expected to cater to academic needs of the region, known as a corridor to South and Southeast Asian countries and as the focal point of much discussed “Look East Policy”, by imparting relevant courses, besides, holding national and international seminars, and conducting research on burning issues concerning the vast region. The Centre was inaugurated by His Excellency, Governor of Meghalaya, Shri R.S. Mooshahary in presence of His Excellency, High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Mr. Tarik Ahmad Karim. The inauguration ceremony was followed by a panel discussion on “India -Bangladesh Relations : Beyond Trade and Commerce”focusing on international issues such as trade and business opportunities, better bilateral relations, sharing of resources between the nations, exchange of technology, higher and technical education, promotion of peace and understanding.
  • Another MoU has been signed between HiTec Education Centre, Ireland and the University of Science and Technology-Meghalaya, promoted by ERD Foundation. This international MOU provides a preliminary statement in relation to future collaboration between the two institutions. The collaboration between the two institutions shall include among others, exchange of faculty, exchange of students, summer/foundation courses, individual and joint research programmes, curriculum development projects, establishments of joint institutes. Under this joint Bachelors and Masters programmes USTM students doing a part of the programme in USTM and a part of the programme at an Irish University and both the Institutions will award the students Bachelors or Masters degree as the case may be. The MOU was signed by Mr. Noel Mc Carrick for HicTec Education Centre, Ireland and Mr Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, University of Science and Technology-Meghalaya on 18th June, 2012.
  • Organised a discussion conclave on “Educational rehabilitation of strife-affected students of BTAD” where over 100 heads of leading educational groups, representatives of NGOs, social workers and activists, corporate heads, opinion leaders and philanthropists from across the country attended on 8th September, 2012.
  • Honourable Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi formally inaugurated Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Centre for Coaching & Guidance (FACC) on 6th November, 2012 to start IAS Coachingclasses with an unique scheme called "HOQUE-20" where 20 brilliant students from economically backward families will be fully sponsored by the foundation. 
  • In the loving memory of the Chairman's late mother, the foundation laying ceremony of Khairun Nessa Begum Women’s College was held on 10th November, 2012 at Badarpur in Karimganj District of Assam in presence of Justice M. S. A. Siddique, Chairman, NCMEI, Dr. Shabistan Gaffar, Chairperson, Committee on Girls’ Education, Govt. of India. This is a bold step of the foundation to break the barriers in Female Education specially for the downtrodden rural women from the minority communities.
  • Centre for Educational Rehabilitation (CER) was formally inaugurated on 14th November, 2012 by rehabilitating more than 400 strife affected students of BTAD in the first phase.
  • Signed MoU with Bamboo & Cane Development Institute (BCDI), Agartala, set up by office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, represented by Shri S. S. Gupta, Chairman, National Centre for Design & Product Development on 20th December, 2012 to start B.Tech course in Cane & Bamboo Technology, PG Diploma in Bamboo cultivation & research programmes.
