Events and Activities, Year 2009


  • Every year the Foundation confers an Award of Excellence to a person who has shown excellence in his /her field of work and/or contributed to societal causes on the occasion of -TECHNO QUEST- the annual event of Central IT College. The ERDF award of excellence for the year 2009 was awarded on 27th April, 2009 to the following personalities-

Gamliel Sherio, Project manager, Guwahati street children project, world vision India for outstanding contribution for improving the plight of street children ; Dr Hitesh Deka, Principal KC Das Commerce College; Mr Mrinal Talukdar, Bureau Chief, UNI, Guwahati for excellence in agency, reporting and setting new standards in professional media management; Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, reader, Political Sc department, Gauhati University for creating public awareness about civic and social rights and responsibilities; Mr Wasbir Hussain, Director Center for development & peace studies, Ghy for peace initiative in general and conflict resolution efforts for the north east in particular.

  • The students have organized an “SBI Students Trade Fair” from 27th April to 29th April, 2009. The duration of the fair was 3 days. All together 40 stall were put up mostly by students, some business houses were also part of it. This was an exercise for the students to improve their entrepreneurial and managerial skills. The fair was inaugurated by Shri S. Sugunendiran, Assistant Manager, SBI.
  • One of the ambitious projects of ERDF  the “Regional Institute of Science and Technology” (RIST) is inaugurated by Dr. D. D. Lapang, Honourable Chief Minister of Meghalaya on 27th July, 2009. RIST is located at Khanapara 9th Mile, Meghalaya and the campus is spread over an area of 16 acres of land located in a scenic surrounding with lush green hillocks and tranquil environment. In the first phase four B-Tech courses - IT, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics has started.
  • Panel Discussion “NER VISION - 2020 role of Universities & R & D Institutions”. Where most of VC of the north east participated in the panel discussion along with several renowned educationist and social activist. The event was held on 5th September, 2009.
  • Engineers day was celeberated on 15th September, 2009. by the foundation with pomp & gaiety to mark the birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya, “father of Engineering” in India. Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (1860-1965) was called a wizard in engineering.
  • A Seminar on “TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS IN THE CITY OF GUWAHATI” was organized by the foundation on 7th November, 2009 to highlight the problems faced by the Guwahati city at large.
  • A day long photo exhibition was organized by the Journalism Department of Central IT college with the theme of Child Labour at Srimanta Kalakhetra, Panjabari on 13th November, 2009
  • AIDS awareness Programme: Like every year on the 1st of December, 2009 World AIDS Day was celebrated by the institutes under the trust by organizing an awareness rally.  Where more than 1000 students participate in the rally. The student distributed red ribbon to general public to spread the awareness. Moreover students from journalism department performed street plays in different areas of Guwahati to spread awareness on the issue.
  • The institutes under the foundation, regularly organizes workshops, seminars and guest lectures for their students on issues relevant to their fields of study. Below is a list of seminars organized :

Topic:  Panel discussion on Brain Drain-its impact on North-East, organized by the trust on 30th June, 2009.
Speakers: Dr. Sangita Dutta, renowned psychiatrist & Counsellor
                Dr Akashitora, writer& media personality

Panel Discussion on the topic: “Scope of Privatisation in Higher Education in Assam with reference to the Private University Act, 2007”on  20th May.
 Mr. Ripun Bora, Education Minister, Assam was one of the Panelists among many other scholars like Prof. Satyendra Kr. Choudhury, Director, EDC Cotton College; Dr. S U Choudhury, Deptt of Chemistry, Cotton College; Mr. Nibir Hazarika, Editor, The Eclectic;  Dr P. K Goswami, Director Technical Education; Mr. Pinuel Basumatary, Accountant General, Assam; Mr. Avinash Joshi, Mission Director, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan; Mr. K Ahmed, Director, IIE; Dr. R.K. Sharma, Deputy Director, NEIST; Mr Amit Choudhury, CPC, ERDF. Mr. Kishalay Bhattacharjee, of NDTV moderated the discussion with ability and aplomb.
